FICS Shortest Mate?

The last issue of the FICS newsletter included 2 games played on FICS which resulted in mate in 7 moves. It didn't take long for our users to send us games which concluded after merely 6 moves. In this issue's first game we feature stubru, who sent us a game he lost in a well-known Caro-Kann trap. He doesn't need to be ashamed of it, as more than 10 games identical to this appear in the ChessBase database, including one won by Paul Keres. In the second game Chessface took his revenge, and after being on the losing side of a mate in 7 last month, he sends us a mate in 6 he delivered.

franta - stubru

1. e4 c6 2. Nc3 d5 3.Nf3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bg4 5.Qe2

OK a well known trap, black surely knows it...

5. ... Nd7??

or does he?

6. Nd6# (see diagram)

Ksus - Chessface

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Bc5 5.Nxc6 Qf6

a known line in the Scotch, but white forgot the threat

6.Nc3 Qxf6# (see diagram)

If you have played a shorter mate let us know and it will be published on the newsletter.
