World Chess Championships FIDE
has announced that the 2001 World Chess Championship and Women's World
Chess Championship will be held in Moscow. Starting November 24 and ending
December 11, the pre-semifinal rounds will be held concurrently with the
Women's World Championship. The 8 round finals will begin January 3 and
finish on the 13th.
The 12th
Najdorf Memorial tourney is under way in Argentina! Anatoly Karpov, Judith
Polgar, and young Tiemour Radjabov currently lead the strong field of 10
players with 3 points each. Games will be relayed live on FICS, and can be
found with the command "games gm". Use "observe #" to
watch one or more of the games. Games and an up to
date crosstable can be found at the official Najdorf site shown below.

In October of
2001 Vladimir Kramnik will take on deep fritz in an 8 game match. Play
will be held at the Le Royal Meridiene Hotel in Manama, Bahrain, from the
12th of October through the 1st of November. Host Edmir Sheikh Hamad Bin
Issa al-Khaleifa offers Kramnik $1,000,000 for a win, $800,000 for a draw,
and $600,000 for a loss against the computer. A news

overcame Frabrice Liardet (nabla) in a tiebreak to take the title as the
first ever unofficial World Losing Chess Champion. Vincent van der Bilt (biltv),
Johan Bosman (thabit), Fabrice Liardet (nabla), and Lenny Taelman (lenthep)
organized the event which took place from July 26-29 in Utrecht,
Netherlands. They are doing a great job helping increase the popularity of
this variant, which is better known on FICS as Suicide.
