"Chess Battle" is a Unique Weekly Live Chess Tournament Event with prizes and features that might change Your World forever! ChessBattle has its own dedicated website at http://ChessBattle.org that represents all the information regarding the project and its current status.
ChessBattle is mainly composed of two stages and they are held on fics. First stage is the Battle Tournament. It's a regular chess tournament as any other one on fics with the exception that there are prizes and the entry is free as usual. The format of the tournament is 5 0 r SS/7 that translates into rated games with time control of 5 0 and 7 rounds to play. The event is held Every Monday on fics. It starts at 13:00 fics server time (16:00 New York time). The tourney is about 90 minutes long and three players are awarded with prizes: two top players and an Upset champion (the player scoring the most rating difference points against higher players). Second stage is composed of the Battle Game and is played between #2 and #1 from the first stage with time control 20 12. The players of the Battle Game are commenting on almost every move they make by using whispers. This way the audience will see the brain work of the high rated players while the players themselves will not be able to see each other comments. This kind of game is also known as a banter game. The winner of the game gets two prizes and runner-up gets just one. The prizes are kindly offered by ChessPublishing.com who is our major sponsor. The prizes are exclusive chess eBooks with pgn play-through database on the latest opening theory for every major opening. We have 60+ eBooks as prizes.
At the time of writing this report on October 29, 2002, we had 9 ChessBattle events and we can state that the project and the events are a huge success. We already had 70+ players in one of the tournaments and our goal is to reach about 100 players in any Battle tournament by the end of this calendar year. It's great fun to play in a tournament with other 70+ players battling it out. We also had a privilege of having a title player in a Battle tourney! We once had International Master Turzo playing in the Battle and several times FIDE Master Chernobog. The event is very high rated and it is recommended to join such an event for lower rated players in order to have an opportunity to play such high rated players and have a chance at winning the upset crown.
Battle Game is one of the greatest features of the ChessBattle! It's amazing to see what very high rated players think before, during, and after each move! It's such a great value for learning chess and trying to reach new levels. Such a game is observed by lots of people on the server and in addition to the player's comments, audience comment on the game and the player's comments as well which spice up the game even more! You have to be there when the Battle Game is in progress to feel the excitement you never experienced! Don't miss it next time. We have it every Monday on fics! And you don't have to do anything, just be there and observe the Battle Game when it's announced right after the battle tourney is finished. Also, the Battle Game is then analyzed by Fritz 7 (best chess analyzing program) and its comments are added to the game and available for download as pgn or cbv files. Those files contain the Battle game with comments from players, audience, and Fritz 7.
Another great feature of the ChessBattle is its Grand Prix System. Every player that plays in the Battle event is entered into the Grand Prix if he/she scores any number of points and doesn't get forfeited or withdrawn. The Grand prix points are equal to the points a player scores during a tournament and are being added to the total number every event. So, the more events you play, the more points you will get in the Grand Prix. Our current leader in Grand prix is ThoBjo with amazing 41.5 points closely followed by logis with 35 points. If ThoBjo misses couple events, logis might take a lead and places will be switched. The Grand Prix is getting hot. First 5 places of the Grand prix at the end of the year will be awarded huge prizes: full subscription to the contest of our sponsor ChessPublishing.com with full access to all those 60+ eBooks and databases!! The project also has its own dedicated discussion board at http://Forum.ChessBattle.org and everyone is welcome there to browse the discussions or start the new topic or post his/her ideas, suggestions, thoughts, or just words of thanks. ChessBattle Team is awaiting your messages in the forum in order to make it the best ever chess project! There are some hot discussions in the forum that will lead to the improvement of the Battle or will just unite players that share same goal to chat and have fun. You can read and post a message without any registration. However, it's greatly recommended to register to enjoy all the benefits of the forum. Registration is completed within several clicks! As it was mentioned above, the ChessBattle has its own website http://ChessBattle.org that offers all the information about past and future events and battles! Stop by and check it out, download battle games and play though them reading those amazing comments. You can even download all the games that have been played during the tournaments. Website has complete details on every rule of the ChessBattle, general quick information, news, prizes lists, sponsors information, etc.
Since August 15th, 2002, during the period of just 76 days, the website http://ChessBattle.org has been accessed by 9199 users, 4368 of which are unique! The website averages about 121 visitors per day.
The ChessBattle has many other great features and you are invited to explore, discover, and experience them.
It is planned in the future to have more sponsors providing the prizes for the winners and participants. Stay tuned! We even plan to have surprise prizes for the event participants. You never know what you might get when you show up to play in the battle tournament... just keep your eyes open.
If you are a titled player (IM, FM, GM, WIM, WFM, WGM), you are invited to a special treat! Just for participating in the event, you are guaranteed a prize even if you don't get to the winner circle. So, win or loose, you always get the prize just for playing!
