An introduction to the Onlinetour
For those who are new to the server, getting around can be a bit
of an experience.
We at FICS recognize this, and offer periodic online tours to help new
members out. These tours serve to help guide the user through various
subjects, such as: Communication, Match/Help Seek, Mamer, and Bughouse.
These are basic introductions, and show the first steps on how to do
these things, specifically with new users in mind.
Mamer OnlineTours are conducted by the Tournament Manager (TM) staff,
while the other Tours (Communication, Match/Seek & Bughouse), are given
by the Service Representative (SR) staff.
The Communication OnlineTour helps the newcomer learn how to talk to his
fellow players, as well as in channels, and shows users how to shout,
among other commands.
The Match/Seek OnlineTour helps newcomers learn how to issue a match
request with a specific player, and how to seek games.
The Mamer OnlineTour explains how tournaments are run on FICS, with
information on mamer, the bot that helps run the tourneys. You will also
learn commands to see tourney standings as well as what games are left in
the current round.
The Bughouse OnlineTour helps explain the basics of how to become open
for bughouse play, and how to get a partner to play bughouse.

To participate in any of the Tours, just type +ch 7. There
will be breaks in all Tours for the participants to ask questions.
Please note the times quoted here are server time, which is USA California
time. To read local time, just type date, and compare server time to your local time.
In addition to these OnlineTours, we also have a couple of Italian-language
OnlineTours, concerning the combined Communication and Match/Seek Game Tours and
Mamer OnlineTour. Thank you to frengo for a great job translating the OnlineTours
into Italian and to Giampy and ronnieg for their help in running these Tours.
The Italian Tours seem to be very popular with our Italian speaking members! :)
Please contact Giampy or ronnieg for an Italian-langauge OnlineTour.
While we run OnlineTours at these times (as often as we can, at least!), you may
also request an OnlineTour at any time (as long as there is not another OnlineTour
scheduled within about a half-hour) by talking to a member who has the SR badge(SR).
GBate is almost always available for this when online...please feel free to ask him! :)
We are also working on an advanced OnlineTour for those who have become comfortable
with the Communication and Match/Seek Game; in addition, there is a second Bughouse
OnlineTour that is being worked on, to show more advanced topics within Bughouse
that were not covered in the first Bughouse OnlineTour.
If you have any suggestions concerning potential subjects for the OnlineTours, or
topics you feel need further explanation within a Tour, please feel free to message GBate,
Chessty, or MAd.
If however you have suggestions for the Bughouse OnlineTour, please
message volcano.
