November 2002 Tip of the Month: Adjudicate

One of the most frequent questions that gets asked on FICS, whether in shouts, or in channel 1, is: "My opponent disconnected is a losing position. What can I do?"
The answer is contained in the help adjudicate and/or help adjudication help files.

When you have a game interrupted, because the opponent disconnected, you should give the opponent a couple of minutes to re-connect. If the opponent re-connects rapidly, you'll be notified by the server. At that point, just type resume, and a challenge will be sent to that opponent (and any other opponents with whom you have adjourned games). Ideally, the opponent will accept, and the game will be finished. However, if the opponent does not resume the game, we ask that you try for a week to resume the game. If the game does not get finished within a week after the game is adjourned, you may send a message to Adjudicate. This will cause the game to be looked at by an admin who is a strong player, so that any win (or draw) that is due may be awarded. You may also ask for an abort of the game.

An exception to the one-week period is made if there is a forced mate/draw that can be demonstrated. You may send a message to Adjudicate immediately in this situation.

If your opponent disconencts, and refuses to continue the game, please make sure to mention this in the message to adjudicate. If the player makes a habit of this, Adjudicate will notice this trend, and the player may be sanctioned as a result.
Before asking Adjudicate to look at your game(s), we highly recommend that you read the following help files: help disconnection & help adjudicate. You can also find relevant information contained in Adjudicate's finger notes (f Adjudicate).

When you message Adjudicate, please follow this basic format:
message Adjudicate White Black result (any analysis)
For example, user logis can type: message Adjudicate logis GBate White wins If he plays ...Bxf5, I play Nxf5+, winning his queen on the next move, and then a rook on the next move after that.

Important Notes:
If the game involves a variant, such as suicide, please mention that in the message to Adjudicate, so that he/she will analyse the game more accurately according to its type.
Please send only one game per message to Adjudicate.
Please submit no more than 5 pending adjudications at any given time.
The workload for the adjudicating admins can be immense, & flooding them with requests only slows down the reponse time.
