***** The Chess Academy *****

The FICS Chess Academy provides a medium for the interaction between strong and weaker chess players.  Stronger players, designated by the symbol (CA), donate their time to help their weaker counterparts in order to share knowledge. The most common event is semi-formal analysis of games or positions, there will also be lectures, master challenge sessions, guided group analysis of GM games, and more!  In accordance with the principles by which FICS was founded, all Academy advisers volunteer their time and expertise. Instructors are users who are master or candidate master (expert) strength players and are enthusiastic about helping others.

Do you have a question on how to participate?  To receive instruction or otherwise participate in the Chess Academy you should follow these steps:

The proceedings start in ch 65, but often "follow (CA Lecturer)" is used while examining a game or position.  Prepare your questions and interesting games before the Chess Academy hour starts.  Game submissions for analysis are welcome, and should be emailed to: The Chess Academy and/or saved in your journal, accompanied by a  message to Academy.  Use tells to channel 65 during the Chess Academy Hours ('tell 65 I don't understand the Lucena position').  Chess advisers will have (CA) after their handles.

***** Server Tip of the Month *****

"My opponent disconnected and I'm winning, what do I do?"

Adjudicate

October's Tip of the Month is to provide a summary of the adjudication process available on FICS and how it works.

Adjudication means that the result of the game is decided by a review of the game situation, rather than having the game completed by the two opponents.  In many cases, because one player disconnected in a losing positions and fails to finish the game.  Another instance, is when a simple connection failure happens and the disconnected player fails to re-log on and finish the game in a timely manner.

On this chess server, adjudications are made by admins who are skilled at chess.  Adjudications should be used only as a last resort.  Whenever possible, adjourned games should be completed by the opponents themselves.  You should attempt to complete the game by messaging your opponents, trying to find times to complete the games, and giving them ample opportunity to do so.  Users are on different time schedules, so please be patient when waiting for your game to be completed.  Adjudications take time and effort, especially on a server with many users, so only ask for adjudication when you absolutely need one.

Before you ask for an adjudication, please read *carefully* both this help file and the one about disconnection - use "help disconnection".

GUIDELINES: You may request adjudication in these two situations:

(a) The game is 7+ days old, and you have contacted your opponent
      several times but he/she refuses to continue;
(b) The game is 7+ days old, you have messaged your opponent several times about continuing, your opponent has been on the server and therefore had a chance to read your messages, but you have had no reply from him/her (in order to see when your opponent has been on the server, type "log handle" such as "log TheOnlyOne").

PROCEDURES: To request adjudication, "message adjudicate <request>", that is, send a message to the special Adjudicate account ("Adjudicate" is not the handle of a user).

Format:  message Adjudicate White Black result (any analysis)

Instructions:  Be sure to list the names for White and Black in the correct order, only one game per message.  If you have a certain line of play (series of moves) you will follow in order to preserve the win or draw, please mention it.  If it is a suicide chess game, please mention this information as well. (You do not need an adjudication in order to resign a game; read "help resign").

An admin will look at the position and decide how to proceed.  The admin will either set the result of the game (win, draw, abort) or contact both players about continuing the game.  To see how Adjudicate typically decides results, "finger Adjudicate" and read the notes.  You and your opponent will be messaged concerning the decision.  The admin's decision will be final.  If a genuine mistake has been made, please message Adjudicate with what went wrong.   Lastly, please be aware that it may take several days for your request to be processed and a decision sent to you.  However, it is more likely that your request will be processed within a couple of days.
SPECIAL NOTES:

(a) "Finger Adjudicate" for current information about guidelines for adjudication decisions and the format for submitting requests.
(b) The command "stored" gives a list of your stored (adjourned) games.
(c) "Match [opponent]" is used to continue resumed games with a single opponent.  "Resume" will automatically challenge users online with whom you have adjourned games.
